How it's calculated
Cats mature very fast early on: at 1 year a cat is like a 15-year-old person, and at 2 like a 24-year-old. After that, each cat year is worth about 4 human years. This is International Cat Care's chart. There's no exact conversion: breed, weight and health change each cat's pace.
How long do cats live?
A 2024 study of 7,936 cats seen at UK clinics found a life expectancy at birth of 11.7 years: 12.5 for females and 11.2 for males. Many cats live past 15. In the same study, neutered cats and cats at a healthy weight lived longer.
